Save money on fuel when you're lighting the way with a Coleman® Kerosene Lantern. It's powered by Coleman® Kerosene, which is out most cost-efficient fuel source. The single-mantle design of this lantern creates a steady, bright glow of up to 700 lumens of light that reaches up to 11 meters away. To get your lantern started, simply add some rubbing alcohol (sold separately) to the primer cup, light the alcohol with a match, then dial in the perfect brightness with the adjustable control knob. Once your lantern is lit, the fuel tank provides a steady base when placed on a table, and the bail handle allows for easy hanging. When you're ready to head home, so is this lantern since it doesn't require any disassembly, which means it's always ready to go with you on your next bright adventure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Dano from Made in USA and built like a tank. This is the only kerosene lantern currently made by Coleman. I wanted a kerosene lantern to augment my standard "white gas" and propane fueled lanterns, as an alternate fuel source for emergency preparedness. Kerosene is also much safer to handle and store that white gas (Coleman Camp Fuel). This full-size lantern is heavy duty and VERY bright. It is almost as well made as the classic Coleman lanterns of yesterday, except for a few minor parts now made of plastic. This is a premium quality lantern that is still made in USA. I would like to see Coleman make a compact Kerosene fueled lantern in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by huckleberry from Timeless and Trustworthy I have several Coleman fuel lanterns and several 639 Coleman kerosene lanterns and I have to say the kerosene lanterns are my favorites. They run really nice and even though the preheat that is required is an extra step, it only takes about 1 minute and the nice thing is after the preheat they are ready to go, turn on the valve and you're in business, no smoke, no flooding, no temporary flames, no fussiness, just bright white light just as steady and bright as can be. It has been my experience that denatured alcohol which is easy to find burns much better and cleaner for the preheat than the 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

Rated 5 out of 5 by KansasCamper from Great once you get used to it The first time I lit it up it seemed troublesome and not worth it. The second time, it worked flawlessly and now I love it. Yes, it does seem a burden to have to buy rubbing alcohol as well as kerosene. But you simply fill the primer cup with alcohol, light it, and wait. It eventually lights up and you simply turn the knob to the left for full brightness. This is a simplistic explanation. It burns bright, and I love the shape of the globe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Camping in Colorado from It’s a beast! This lantern is very bright! Even with a single mantle. I love the kerosene, no need to worry about gasoline varnishing. As good as any Coleman lantern I have that is 50 years old.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Greazy Tom from Reliable! Purchased this model 639C as an addition to my Coleman lantern collection and have no regrets! Simple to operate and puts out a steady, bright light with minimal re-pressurizing. I added a red globe and an amber globe also to change the light as i desire. Great lantern!

Rated 5 out of 5 by speedy from GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO WHITE GAS I'm not sure that i will be able to use it in the house during power failures as i do with my propane lanterns, but it does work great. I followed the instructions for the lighting and its bright as can be,,, using inexpensive kerosene.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mark Sullivan from Will likely outlast me Great lantern. Would recommend it over a dual fuel model, and certainly over a propane one, if you are on the fence. The kerosene lanterns need to be primed with denatured alcohol, but that is a simple process that takes a minute or two. Good quality kerosene is cheaper and more available than Coleman fuel, and it's less volatile. At the end of the day, if you only want a light source, get an LED headlamp or lantern. If you, however, are the type of person that prefers a manual transmission over an automatic, enjoys the process of learning how things work, or if you just like the idea of having something your kids can remember when they are older, buy this lantern. The only negative I have is I wish you could get it in red. I would also point out that the black hard plastic Coleman case works perfectly for this lantern. For some reason Coleman does not acknowledge this, but I got one off Amazon and it works fine.
