The pre-heat procedure , the kerosene , the sturdiness of how it is built etc. If I had to use an analogy it would be be while we all drive automatic transmission vehicles , some of us still enjoy the feel and experience of a manual transmission. Just don't try to run it empty, it will turn the mantles black with soot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by KansasCamper from Great once you get used to it The first time I lit it up it seemed troublesome and not worth it. The second time, it worked flawlessly and now I love it. Yes, it does seem a burden to have to buy rubbing alcohol as well as kerosene. But you simply fill the primer cup with alcohol, light it, and wait. It eventually lights up and you simply turn the knob to the left for full brightness. This is a simplistic explanation. It burns bright, and I love the shape of the globe.

While I have numerous white gas and propane models, I have never had a kerosene model and I convinced myself that I needed one so it was ordered. While waiting for delivery, buyers remorse set in. After all, how many lanterns does one family need? The lantern arrived via FedEx in perfect condition. Other reviewers have called this lantern a “beast” and I think that name is appropriate. It is a full size high quality lantern with phenomenal light out. It has become one of our favorites. Has my buyers remorse subsided? No, I should have ordered two of them while they were on sale!

These Kero lanterns are great!! i have older white gas lanterns but decided to get a new Kero lantern(used coleman kero lanterns are on the rare side and usually pretty expensive) Started off with one of these lanterns 2 years ago and now i have 4! Make sure to follow startup instructions and try a peerless 111 mantle sometime they are very bright and durable.IF YOUR VAPORIZER IS CLOGGING OFTEN try opening the control knob from off to on then immediatly off very quickly after pumping up lantern to purge the air from the brass tube BEFORE PREHEATING took me awhile to figure out why generator was clogging up with carbon frequently but it was because of preheating a dry generator with just the kero residue inside will carbon up the generator in a flash

I use them when I am cooking on my grill or smoker. Sometimes when I am sitting on my back porch and it is cold out I'll use it for a heater. The only 2 gripes that I have... 1. The globe has made in china printed right in the middle. Why you would have a made in USA lantern and put this on I cannot understand. I found that you can polish off the MIC part with some rubbing compound and a dremel. 2. The 2 lanterns were shipped loose in the box. No bubble wrap or packing at all. One of them was broken in shipment. Coleman did step up ship me a new lantern with no trouble but I would say the items need to be packed better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mark Sullivan from Will likely outlast me Great lantern. Would recommend it over a dual fuel model, and certainly over a propane one, if you are on the fence. The kerosene lanterns need to be primed with denatured alcohol, but that is a simple process that takes a minute or two. Good quality kerosene is cheaper and more available than Coleman fuel, and it's less volatile. At the end of the day, if you only want a light source, get an LED headlamp or lantern. If you, however, are the type of person that prefers a manual transmission over an automatic, enjoys the process of learning how things work, or if you just like the idea of having something your kids can remember when they are older, buy this lantern. The only negative I have is I wish you could get it in red. I would also point out that the black hard plastic Coleman case works perfectly for this lantern. For some reason Coleman does not acknowledge this, but I got one off Amazon and it works fine.

Simple to operate and puts out a steady, bright light with minimal re-pressurizing. I added a red globe and an amber globe also to change the light as i desire. Great lantern!

Quality seems to be as good as my older lanterns with the exception being the Chinese globe that comes on it. Outside of that you can't beat it plus it's way cooler than a propane lantern.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Dave R. from Great light for the great outdoors Coleman GPA lanterns (and stoves) are simply the best outdoors and emergency lighting ever built, the modern stuff isn’t quite the same as pre-1980s but still beats anything else. Even the modern battery operated LED lights don’t compare. I grew up using these and hope to pass them on to my kids. I’ve even become a collector, but will always be a user first.

I followed the instructions for the lighting and its bright as can be,,, using inexpensive kerosene.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Mgrendel from Flooding kerosene lantern I tested out my new Coleman kerosene lantern on a recent camping trip. After following the lighting instructions twice, the lantern seemed to be "flooding". Upon closer inspection I discovered the burner tube assembly was loose inside the burner frame. The small screw was not holding the burner tube into the burner frame, nor could I get the small holes to line up for said screw to be screwed into. Perhaps a slight assembly error? I hope to resolve this issue and I look forward to using my kerosene lantern for years to come.

I collect antique and vintage Coleman lanterns of all kinds, I wanted a new model just to see how quality has changed over the years. These lanterns are still well built but expensive for what you get. I have a 1958 model 237 that is pretty much entirely constructed of nickel plated brass. It’s in fantastic shape and built like a tank. These new lanterns just don’t hold a candle to the old forged brass burner assemblies and brass founts. A decent vintage 237 can be found for the same price but would way outlast anything made today. Definitely disappointing but I still love the brand.

Very little smell once you get her up to speed..Have replaced the generator once. Tip: do not use drug store alcohol to pre heat. Smokes and smells very bad. I highly recommend “ heat” in yellow plastic bottle fo pre heat. Heat in red bottle does not work well. Available at gas stations and big box stores.

THE KEROSENE LANTERN REQUIRES THE EXTRA STEP OF PRIMING THE GENERATOR WITH ALCOHOL = SO YOU WILL NEED TO CARRY ALCOHOL ALSO. THIS LANTERN WILL REMAIN AS A BACK-UP \ BACK-UP THE LANTERN BURNS YELLOW ... QUITE YELLOW WITH HEAVY FUMES INSIDE THE HOME. I TESTED IT WITH A COLEMAN DUAL FUEL LANTERN THAT I BURN ETHANOL FREE GASOLINE ... NICE BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT AND LITTLE TO NO FUMES WHAT SO EVER, INSIDE THE HOME. I USE THIS LANTERN WHEN THE POWER IS OUT FOR A FEW DAYS.

The lantern arrived in time for the first camping trip of the year and it performed GREAT! Just like the Old Days with the generator warmer. Single mantle brute enough to light the night!

Upon opening the box yesterday I noticed the pump plunger was difficult to operate. I pulled the pump from the tube and saw rust inside the pump tube, well I wasn't happy. Upon shutdown, I noticed after 5 minutes the lantern would not go out. I was finally able to get the lantern to shut down if I held the valve in the off position. I figured I would light it one more time, so during the preheat cycle i noticed kerosene dripping from the air tube which confirmed that the valve assembly is defective.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Longtime Customer from New old stock but obsolete as to parts Just Ordered this kerosene lantern through Coleman website which did not indicate or mention important parts are OBSOLETE and cannot be replaced through Coleman’s website. Lantern arrived (11/23) from Wichita factory with a manufacturing date (5/22) reflecting it’s been sitting in inventory for some time. More troubling is the possibility that the Coleman Kerosene 639C is discontinue and customers are not being informed that parts are obsolete and cannot be replaced through Coleman directly. Only old inventory of these kerosene lanterns appear to be sold without any notice to customers that they’re purchasing discontinued or obsolete lanterns. How can you purchase and receive a new lantern that has obsolete parts? This is not honest marketing!

I have one of these 639C's and a 200A from yesteryear that I converted to run on Kerosene. These Kerosene lanterns really produce a lot of light and Kerosene is easy to find as most gas stations sell it. It is also less volatile than unleaded gas or camp fuel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tim M from Great design and super safe! This is a great and classic design single burner Kerosene lantern. If you collect lanterns or or have seen the model 237 Coleman lantern then you know this lantern's lineage. I would really like to see Coleman make this more like the model 237 in that you could use either camp fuel or kerosene. This is a great design in that there is no ventilator nut to lose and almost impossible to put the ventilator on incorrectly. First of all please read the instructions with this lantern and make sure that you correctly preheat the generator before you turn the fuel valve open otherwise you can have a mess or a sooty fire up. If this is your first kerosene lantern or liquid fueled lantern, please practice before you go camping. Always familiarize yourself with all the propper start up procedures. Try to learn how to tell it's properly pressurized and the generator is hot enough to turn the fuel knob on. You may need to fill the alcohol cup up a second time for preheating in very cold conditions. I like to use a small torch lighter to preheat my generator most of the time, heat evenly bottom to top. I always teach others how to use the lantern that will be at the camp site. Make sure you have some extra mantles as they are fragile and can break in transit or use. Don't leave a mantle with a hole running too long or it can create a hot jet of flame at the globe and potentially cause a crack or super heat whatever it faces. Remember the lantern will continue to run for a bit after the fuel knob is turned off, great for getting into the tent! Always make sure there are no leaks after you pressurize the lantern, you dont want a mess. I honestly think the design of this lantern is near perfect , i would like the old style positive shut off fuel valve though. Always have a spare pump cup or rebuild kit handy, these neoprene ones tend to dry out and break more ofter than the leather. I definitely recommend buying a carry case for the lantern, it's nice having everything in one case. A very sturdy lantern with good construction and quite good looking. On a final note i don't think there is anything more calming than the hiss and warm light of a coleman lantern.

I wish I could have bought two more. I will never use batteries at camp. I hope more liquid gas appliances will come soon! It'd make my year to see a "seasons" lantern available in the U.S.

This isn't exactly like it's predecessor, the Model 237 but, it's nice in it's own right and about the best Coleman makes today. Hopefully they will catch the drift of all the people going back to liquid fueled lanterns and begin producing more models again........I mean that IS what made Coleman what it is today afterall!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Waldog from Best lantern Coleman makes!!! I just purchase another one of these for a total of 3. Absolutely love these lanterns. They are well built and with reasonable care should last DECADES. Kerosene is SAFER TO STORE as it it MUCH less flammable than Coleman/White Gas. It can be safely stored for years and does not degrade like car gas. For Preppers, I truly think this is the ideal solution to light AND heat preparations. Kerosene is cheap compared to any other fuel source. You MUST have spare mantles for this lantern, so order several when you buy your lantern. Buy it when you can. They are often "Out of stock".

I have 21 Coleman lanterns, some are more than 50 years old and still work perfect. I got this newer model because I needed another source of fuel, kerosene, just in case .

It is very easy to light, and I always feel safer using kerosene vs coleman fuel. This lantern puts out a great amount of light to light up your camp. This lantern is very stout so I expect it to last a lifetime if properly taken care of. Good job Coleman!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Looki from I love this lantern I love this lantern. With its huge number 11 mantel this thing really puts out the light, it will light up the whole camp. Only down side to the mantel is, it isn't available everywhere. So pick up several extras when you buy this. I like fiddling around with things and because of the preheat procedure it makes this lantern even more enjoyable. I have several other kerosene products, like stoves, heaters and flat wick lanterns so having the lantern run off the same fuel is convenient.

We would be delighted to answer your inquiry. Upon checking, please be advised that you should always light the mantles with a match only and let them burn to ash before lighting the lantern. Attempting to light the lantern and burn off the mantles at the same time can cause a mantle to tear or break. It is recommended that if you have an electronic ignition lantern, you light it the first time with a match. After being burned off, mantles are delicate. Using the electronic ignition on the first lighting can cause the mantle to break. Lighting the lantern the first time with a match will allow the mantles to expand and shape themselves, which makes them stronger. We hope this helps answer your question.
