Had it for years and love it
This is a great product. Very bright. Very well made. I’ve not been kind to mine over the years and it’s still going strong. I read some of the negative reviews here and from the sound of it those people haven’t used a gas lantern before. All mantles get brittle, all nuts on all hats get loose, it comes with the territory. Nothing will outshine a gas lantern though. Maybe the folks who wrote negative reviews should stick with battery power. I have a “tank tree” and attach mine to a 20lb propane tank at basecamp.

Mantels break with even the slightest bump
Bought this lantern to use on night time clam digs here on the Washington coast. The first mantel burned through on the pre burn rendering the lantern almost completely useless. Got new mantels the next day. Pre burned one went to light lantern and it blew the mantel out. Put yet another mantel onpre burned, got the lantern lit successfully. By the time I walked from the truck to the waters edge, the mantel had completely broke off at the top, rendering the lantern again mostly useless, unless I kept it tilted so the mantel would actuly kind of do its job. I guess if you lit it and hung it and just left it, it might me q decent lantern. But it cant be moved once lit.

Super Bright. Doesn't Last Due To Design Flaw.
The lantern has one major design flaw; a threaded screw attached to the main body of the internal lantern breaks off into the lantern and cannot be repaired during basic usage. If the lantern is jostled around, the internal screw separates from the thin metal and cannot be reattached. Once the screw falls inside the lantern, there is no easy way to retrieve it and which prevents you from attaching the glass globe and top to the lantern.
If Coleman could help me with a way to fix this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Beacon in the night
I have Coleman fuel, Coleman kerosene and Coleman propane lanterns and I like them all for different uses. The Northstar propane is really convenient with the push button ignition and the fact that propane needs no warmup time to vaporize the fuel, plus they run a little cleaner with hardly any smell and it is by far the brightest of the bunch. The only downside is propane is the most expensive to operate but is not a big issue for me. I definitely wouldn't be without one and would consider it a good choice for backup lighting for power outages.

So Easy to Use
We have had the dual fuel laterns in the past, but the propane is so much easier. Turn the knob press the button and you are good to go. Even my wife can light it.

Not pleased.
The bolt in the top of the lantern that is there to hold the top is loose and falls into the lantern making it almost impossible to secure the top to the lantern. Very poorly designed.

A wonderful source of both light and heat
We live up in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California where we experience many power outages (21 last year). While we do have a generator and use it to keep our refrigerator and freezer on as necessary, we find the noise ruins a perfectly peaceful power outage. Lucky our house is large and drafty enough to allow indoor usage of the Northstar (I know, I know, they rightfully tell you not to do this). It is easy to light, very bright and illuminates an entire room. We do have multiple Carbon dioxide alarms and never leave them unattended. While I understand and commend the caution that Coleman gives around using these indoors, it is important to remember that the Pennsylvania Dutch still use propane lanterns to light their homes.
