I have and still use a dual fuel lantern and rate it a 5 star, however we decided to purchase an LP lantern and chose the Northstar. I had high expectations however the electric start igniter is at the bottom of the lantern and the globe fills up with fuel then it ignites. A audible pop sounds off and so many times after the lantern cools down the globe has cracked from the pressure. I no longer use the igniter and use a lighter and light from the top. I have replaced more globes in 3 years on the Northstar than I have on my Duel Fuel in 25 years.....Is it bright? For sure, but I hate the lantern.......

Rated 3 out of 5 by UMike from Mantle Too Delicate Mantles not available at Walmart or Bass Pro even though I bought the lantern at Walmart two years ago. They are currently $10.49 for a four pack on Amazon. I guess you are paying for brightness, not durability. The lantern is bright, but don't expect a used mantle to be in one piece when you need your lantern next time, like when your power goes out at home. Always have a spare ready. I would recommend the older style, slightly less bright lantern with mantles that are much cheaper, much more durable, and available even in your local hardware store.

Rated 1 out of 5 by OD Camper from Not as bright and a gas hog I purchased my Northstar several years ago for car camping for scouts and hunting, long before it had the feet sticking out of the base. It was never brighter than the standard two mantle propane lantern from Coleman and it hogs the gas. It also has the electric start but is very hard to start without feeling like I am going to blow up my camp. Now, even with a new mantle, it's very dim. Won't get as bright as when it was new which was never bright enough for the hype. I can't find any information on what to do about it. I am very disappointed with the overall performance that I have received with this product. I hope their new products are of a higher quality. All my other Coleman stuff has been of the highest quality but this product was very over rated from the start.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Shining in the dark from The northstar is lighting up my life again. I miss the days when 1 lantern was all that was needed for a group to fish at night. Recent years it seems as though everyone now needs their own lantern. The northstar brings that back. First outing and it was just like the old days as a child growing up and going every weekend to the fishing hole and having plenty of light for my parents, my three siblings and also my aunt and uncle. And getting up there in age my eyes are starting to feel the effects of time and what is nearly impossible with most lanterns I can now tie up a new line with so much less mishaps. Would rate higher but I’m not sure on the durability of the lantern at this time. So far I’m very impressed. Most light I’ve had in years.

Rated 1 out of 5 by NatlChamp from Bright but doesn't hold up Worked okay for a while. Electric ignition stopped working, lens cracked, mantels don't hold up. Had for three hunting seasons. Would not recommend. Ended up using my old electronic ignition lantern instead.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Oso #1 from A disappointment I was wanting to upgrade my existing lanterns. I thought the Northstar would be the one. Was I disappointed. While it looked good. it was no brighter than my $20 off brand lantern. As I've seen from other contributors, The mantles are exceptionally delicate. I have to put a new mantle on each and every trip. I've had mantles last for three trips on my olds lanterns. Then to top it off, it was blown over in a gust of wind and broke the globe. I haven't been able to find a reasonable replacement in a year plus.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Former Customer from Works fine when they are new! I am on my second one. The first lasted two years (heavy use) before just falling apart. I bought the same one as I was traveling, and that was what was available. Now I come to this site, to see which mantle I need to replace the current model. Surprise! Coleman provides no info whatsoever! Evidently the people who make this, do not care if it works for you, or not. The customer service is rock bottom!
