Unimpressive Recharging Routine
I was drawn to this lantern with advertising suggesting a USB connection... which I interpreted as "lantern recharging via USB connection". Wrong! USB connection is to attach a cell phone. In order to recharge the lantern, you must physically remove the rechargeable batteries (supplied) within each of the four detachable light panels and recharge them in your own separately purchased battery recharging system. Very archaic and user non-friendly. 8 alkaline batteries (not supplied) need to be inserted into the base of the lantern, but whose purpose I have not yet determined.

Just never works
I bought from QVC a few years back. Our electric goes out frequently. I put in all new batteries. I need maybe every 6 months. And EVERYTIME batteries are all dead. I replace, all works great, then next time I need it, all dead again. They should not be all dead from 1 use every 6 months. I am fed up, now am taking to the landfill. What an awful product.

Unreliable
Pros: very bright, great concept for multiple family members to use and magnetic use for hands free operating under vehicles is great.
Cons: battery life is horrendous. Purchased, new batteries (8 D batteries) added for halloween. Let charge til Thanksgiving for setting up Christmas lights. Main unit turns on very bright but all individual lights are dead when pulled off the unit. Never got one use from them!! Onlynassume their batteries are dead and need replacing too. Not suitable as described by their matketing materials.

Great Idea! Poor Execution.
Saying this lantern is rechargeable is a touch misleading. Yes, the removable panels are rechargeable, IF you've installed EIGHT D size batteries in the base. There is no plug for the base itself to recharge. So even if you have an alternative power source, such as a portable battery powerpack, you cannot plug this unit in to charge it, or prolong its' use.
A HUGE opportunity missed here, Coleman! I'm returning it, hoping you hit it out of the park on the next version, Made in USA would be even better, even at a premium!

Too many features
This lantern is expensive and has awesome features but is unable to support them. The eight D batteries are unable to keep the removable panels charged for very long, it needs more power. Buy a simpler lantern and enjoy the light!

Nice lantern bad NiNH batteries and charger
I received this as a gift. When I first used this product for an emergency, the detachable light batteries were dead and wouldn't charge. I left new D cells for over a week to charge the detachable lights. They never would charge. I have now disassembled the detachable lights and recharged the cells in a separate charger and it now works but for how long? Apparently the charger unit doesn't work properly.
It's a great idea but not quite ready for prime time! The Coleman engineers need to work on this.

Love the Product
The only thing I do not like about this product, it is not rechargeable. Very handy, especially when you have multiple campers. I have two and love the product. I would buy again. I honestly forgot I had them and now putting them to use for my RV.

Not for Temporary Power Outage
To keep the removable lanterns charged you need to keep the D cell batteries in even if you're not using the lantern. Over time the D cells will degrade, burst and leak, so you have to keep using the lantern even if you don't need it.

A surprising and very useful device.
Where I live, south of Sydney, Australia, we often suffer the occasional blackout from sudden storms. Our daughter came to light for us with this extremely handy device. Now, I don’t hae to grope around for candles in the dark.

Great Concept, Cheap Construcion
The concept of a charging base lantern with 4 detachable panel/flash lights is fantastic and a perfect addition to my families camping gear. The actual light from the lantern and 4 detachable panel/flash lights is great, however as soon as you pick the lantern up you can feel how poor the durability is going to be. Sure enough, on only it's second use it was accidentally dropped from an approx 2' height, when it hit the ground the weight and momentum of the 8 D Cell batteries smashed right through the locking tabs of the bottom battery compartment door, rendering the entire unit useless, no way to power the lantern, USB Charger, and no ability to recharge the 4 panel lights, all due to cheaply made case/battery door. Unfortunately I purchased this online, and had a certain level of expectations on the durability of Coleman products, as I only needed to pick this thing up once to know the case was destined to smash into many pieces in no time. If I had been in a store and got to feel it, it never would have been purchased. Disappointed in Coleman for putting out a dollar store quality constructed product, and I have learned not to have blind confidence in Coleman gear.

Great idea but constantly drains batteries UNUSED!
Great concept and love the feature set. I bought this for my family for power outages and hurricanes but I ALWAYS have to keep a spare batteries even though I don’t use the lantern until there is an outage. The batteries drain just sitting without use. I have never spent so much money on batteries. I had even bought one for work and recommended it to another coworker before I knew the batteries drained so quickly without usage. Such a disappointment.

Very good light with one exception
Recently purchased two Quad Pros for $99.99 and love the versatility, Showed it to a friend who had to have one, then the surprise, he found it selling on Amazon.com for less than $60, Not happy the intro price came after the retail price.

Great idea poorly executed
The lights are bright and they work very well up to a point. With the cost of D cell batteries I thought I would get ahead of the game and use rechargeable batteries. Great Idea but that also takes that energy and charges the 4 pull away lights. Please add a charge point so that those lights and batteries can be charged with a USB connection without pulling the D cell out each time and throwing them in the charger I have to carry.

Wish it's rechargeable and product docs are online
I like the brightness of the lantern. However the fact it requires 4X or 8X D batteries is disappointing. The last time we bought D batteries was 15 years ago. It would be much more sensible to have a rechargeable battery. Existing technologies are readily available in this day and age.
Also it would be better aligned with current customer needs to make product docs, such as user manual, available online.

Not Ecologically Sustainable & Expensive to Power
On the packaging there is no mention that the D cell batteries are not provided. Also it is inexcusable in this day and age that you can use the lantern to recharge your phone but not to recharge the batteries in the lantern. Some campers are sensitive to the impact we have on the environment, but not Coleman. Shame.

Safety Hazard
I bought the previous generation of this product. Just put in new batteries and smoke came out of the USB port on the top. This product was burning up. Whole house now smells like burnt electronics. We don’t even use the product much and it is already fried.

Handle loose
since i brought this, the handle keeps coming loose, so you cannot carry it with it at all,this is from the word go, i am trying to get intouch with Coleman to see what they can do about it, and as someone says u just touch it and one of the lights falls off.

Very disappointed
Bought these a few years ago for all the family. Every single one of them died within a few years. And just like another review, they drain the batteries as they sit. Would not recommend. Coleman, very disappointed in your quality anymore.
