I've used many Coleman lanterns through the years with some dating back to the 1950's and this one is built with the same quality. It is extremely bright, especially when you compare it to the single-mantle propane lantern. The cool factor from using kerosene and the alcohol ignition system puts it over the top. Kerosene has another plus for me. I live in a rural area and power outages are frequent with some lasting up to five days. In those cases, gasoline and propane get scarce quickly. This lantern gives me an alternative fuel source. After using this lantern for several months now, I've ordered a second one. Here's my only gripe; it doesn't come in red like the old 220 models. That would be the icing on the cake. So Coleman, if you're listening, PLEASE offer some in red.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Ed Horan from Coleman Lantern packing and shipping complaint Received the lantern undamaged. It wasn't packed very well, when compared to lanterns that I've bought in the past. The only protection was a brown wrapping paper coiled up and wedged into one side of the box. Skimping on shipping protection seems like a poor way to cut corners to save some money, especially when the lantern gets damaged and Coleman has to ship another one to replace it, still taking a chance with very little protection.

It looks cheap and not as good as the older lids with the center screw. I also remember the 2 burners, not sure yet if this works as good as the 2 burner ones, have not used it yet. I think I remember they had a old school replica one foe sale but was super big bucks.

It seems to require fresh Kerosene to work properly. I have 3 Coleman Kerosene Lanterns; I have 2 model 201 and the newest is the 639. I buy my kerosene at a local gas station and use it in my kerosene heater as well as my kerosene lanterns. I have a 5 gal can that is about 2 years old. The heater and both 201's use it without any trouble. But when I put it in the 639 the mantle will turn black. With both 201 not having the problem I assumed there was a problem with the 639 after replacing mantel and trying again the same problem returned, so I replaced the generator, and the mantel. relite the lantern and after a few min the problem returned. so, I bought some expensive kerosene off the shelf at a local big box store. drained the tank and refiles with the new Kerosene, replaced the mantle again, relite and the problem went away. So, in my experience if you buy this lantern thinking that you can set it aside with a few gals of kerosene and keep for an emergency you will be very disappointed and in the dark when the lights goes out and you try using it for light.

This kerosene lantern works better than I ever expected! Priming it with denatured alcohol is simple and the lantern lights up immediately after priming. It is very bright for a one mantle lantern. The quality of the lantern seems very good. The shipping from Coleman was fast.

Like all Coleman lanterns, they work great and are such a beneficial tool to use for either epic camping trips or during emergencies. One of my lanterns was made in 1949 and still runs perfectly. Let that be a testament that you can pass these lanterns down multiple generations and they still operate well!

Burns bright, burns long, burns hot. Quality is very good on the one I received. If you have any problems with a Coleman product it has been my experience they will take care of it. Exceeded my expectations in the past dealing with them.

Only reason they don't get 5 stars is because they aren't quite the quality they used to be, but very few things are in this time of shareholder profits and the environmental stranglehold on industry in our country.

Turned the valve on an it lit up right away. This is my first kerosene lantern and couldnt be more impressed with its performance. It is very bright. Consumption of kerosene is better than expected. Great lantern!

Very good service and as far as the lantern it’s a gift but looks like I’ll be buying one for myself. All lanterns are a little pricey these days so this is no different. Love it

They were part of my time in The Boy Scouts and throughout my years of camping. This is my first kerosene lantern and I am looking forward to many years of great service. So glad Coleman still builds these models.

Easy to light, great light output, but a couple of issues: The lantern is too noisy on full power to relax or have a quiet conversation near it - it's really loud - I have Coleman white gas lanterns and they burn much quieter. You can adjust the 639 down somewhat to make it quieter, maybe a third of the way down from full, but then the kerosene smell gets very strong, so apparently it's not burning completely unless at full power - this cancels out the usefulness of any adjustability. Also, maybe it's just me being new to the lantern, but I have used Coleman white gas lanterns and stoves for years and the pump on this lantern doesn't work smoothly like my white gas versions. It's very difficult to push the plunger in when your thumb is over the hole in the pump knob, the majority of the time it wants to rebound without adding any air pressure to the tank, and I cannot figure out how to get it to pump air into the tank consistently.

It provides a usable, no disruptive warm light with great ambiance that I believe everyone should get the chance to enjoy and experience I couldn't recommend this enough.

My old one is due for some TLC so I made that an excuse for a new one. Kerosene makes sense since I keep it around for emergency heat. It arrived in one piece so I did the usual setup, filled it and put some alcohol in the cup. These days I live in a small city, so I didn't have a dozen pair of coyote eyes watching. It lit the first time without the theatrics of the gas jobs and settled into the old familiar hiss. I wanted to run it for a couple hours to burn it in. As I sat there in the circle of light I was reminded of other occasions with the comfortable light and that hiss. Ice fishing, deer camp, camping, doing chores around the property in the still of the night. I realized that Coleman lanterns have been a good part of life. I kinda hated to turn it out, but there will be more times. I thought about getting an older one, but I want spares and consumables available for a light I depend on. I won't be without one even now in the city.
