A porcelain-coated 2-tier ventilator helps resist corrosion and rust and the glass globe can tolerate high-temperatures to prevent cracking while a metal guard adds protection from impacts. Works fine when they are new!
I am on my second one. The first lasted two years (heavy use) before just falling apart. I bought the same one as I was traveling, and that was what was available.
Now I come to this site, to see which mantle I need to replace the current model.
Surprise! Coleman provides no info whatsoever! Evidently the people who make this, do not care if it works for you, or not. The customer service is rock bottom!

Durable, bright and reliable.
Bought my Northstar in 2004 prior to an approaching hurricane. 14 years later it's still running strong. I bought the hard case to store it in and added a frosted globe. I'll never get rid of it.

Great Lantern but Mantles Too Weak
I had this and used it twice and we're very gentle on flat surface and only lit it up on a table. Second time using it the mantles fell apart. Difficult to find replacements

Special Mantels that nobody Carries.
Great lanterns. If you are lucky only one mantle out of two without breaking. 5.95 to 15.95 for two mantels. Not unless the supply chain improves.

Bright light but not so durable
Purchased as a gift but ended up keeping for myself because of the brightness of the lantern. A couple years of ownership and light duty use and the ignition stopped working. The propane control knob was also installed upside down, a minor inconvenience but more noticeable now that the ignition quit. I'll get the old fashioned two mantle from now on.

Unwanted “afterglow”
I do a lot of camping with scouts and have used Coleman lanterns for over 40 years now. It was time to upgrade again and I purchased 2 of these. They light efficiently, and are bright. The problem is they do not shut off completely! They will actually re-light and begin to glow again after a few seconds of turning the knob to “off”.

Storage case issues???
I'm not really sure how to rate this! I had issue with the fact that in all my efforts to retrieve the storage case failed! It also had some damage as there was a sizeable chip in the ventilator hood! On the other hand customer service offered solutions to somewhat my satisfaction but I was still disappointed not having protection for my lantern.

Great camping addition
This lantern is fantastic. It doesn't add the artificial LED glow to your campsite so it actually feels like you're camping. It runs for a long time on a single can of propane. The handle makes it easy to transport while lit without burning yourself or anything else. Great option if you have the propane to spare.

Worked well for20 years
I have used this lantern for over 20 years. At least 10-15 trips a year. The sparker capped out last week. 02/010/24, . I have to agree with the reviewer that it is very easy to get it cross threaded. The threads are very fine and I am always afraid or ruining them. Thinking about a replacement.

Where Do You Find Mantels? Did you discontinue!?
Where does one find Mantels for this? I brought it two years ago and can't find them anywhere. Not even on the Coleman website. So help me if you discontinued them, leaving me with a useless lantern I purchased just two years ago, it will be the last Coleman purchase I ever make!

Excellent lantren
This lantren is the best !!!! Have used it for 9 yrs. at every hunting and camping adventure. Only once did the lantren run dim . Propane fuel is not always clean , opened it up and cleaned the jet and back to normal . Highly recommend .

Questionable durability.
I've been using Coleman lanterns and stoves for decades. I decided it was time to replace my old lantern after the valve got worn out (I used it for 20 years or so with no issues). I bought this lantern last fall. The light output is amazing, and at full blast, I got a couple of evenings out of one tank. The mantles are a little more prone to breaking due to their length and being stretched to attach to two points but not bad. I love the electronic ignition, it feels much safer than lighting the old lanterns with a match.
The bad: I went on my annual fall, week long fishing trip with my friend I've known since grade school. After that, I packed it up in it's case and that's where it stayed until my spring trip. We got to camp last week and I unpacked the lantern and the globe was shattered. Keep in mind that to and from both times it was in it's case that was in a big rolling plastic container. This was not the result of abuse, rather it was substandard materials/workmanship. I chose this lantern based on the brand and expected durability, I was sorely disappointed.

I have been using coleman brand lanterns for over 50 year and i love the self contained cover keeps the glass safe and a breeze to store and pack, there may be cheaper lanterns but none better.
